If Social Media Bans Don't Work, What Does?

If bans aren't the solution, where should we focus instead? This article shows what actually helps protect kids in everyday digital life and what's often missing from the current debate.

At first glance, social media bans can seem like a clear solution. They aim to set boundaries and send a signal: something is being done. But as the example of Australia shows, they don't hold up in practice.

If bans don't work, the next question becomes inevitable: what does?

Between regulation and reality

There are two possible approaches.

The first is to regulate platforms more strictly. This means addressing how they are designed. Content and features are built to capture attention, extend usage, and keep users coming back. At the same time, content that is not appropriate for young users remains easily accessible. If regulation is going to be effective, it needs to focus here, with the goal of making digital spaces safer rather than excluding kids altogether.

But this path is not easy.

Right now, regulation is mainly being discussed at the level of individual countries, while platforms operate globally. No single country has the leverage to enforce fundamental change.

Recent developments in the United States highlight these limits. In one case, Meta was ordered to pay substantial damages because risks to minors were not adequately addressed. In another, both Meta and YouTube were held liable because their platforms are designed in ways that extend usage and strongly engage young users.

These cases show that even when responsibility is established, the underlying systems don't change.

The second approach starts in everyday life

Regardless of what rules exist or may come in the future, usage happens in everyday life. On kids' devices, in their immediate environment.

Looking at other areas helps put this into perspective. Films come with age ratings. Toys must meet safety standards. Food is regulated.

And yet, the final decision always rests with parents. They decide what their kid can watch, what they can use, and what they consume.

The same applies to social media. Kids are already part of these digital spaces, and they will continue to be. That's why it is not enough to focus on access alone. What matters is how kids engage with these platforms and who guides them along the way.
